Music Recommendations for Isolation Part 4: Christmas/Holiday Songs

Music Recommendations for Isolation Part 4: Christmas/Holiday Songs

I have a love/hate relationship with the Christmas holiday season. So much of the season seems cliche and tacky to me. So many people wake up from their Thanksgiving nap and think it’s time to decorate for Christmas. I’m never a fan of anticipating a holiday a month in advance because by the time the holiday finally arrives, it never measures up to the hype - especially in 2020 where staying away from family is the greatest gift of love & affection you can give.

Today is December 24th and since I only play Christmas music on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, I figure it’s a great time to share my Christmas playlists with you all. I have two main playlists: ‘Christmas Time’ and ‘Trapping Paper’.

Christmas Time’ is a collection of my favorite Christmas songs. There are a few Christmas classics in this playlist, but many are excluded since I expect to hear a lot of them continuously all December long and I’m usually tired of them by Christmas Eve. To many people, Christmas playlists are full of carols and choirs and to those people, there are hundreds of playlists out there made for you - they’re very popular and easy to find. You will find a few of the staples here so for the traditionalists out there that are still reading, you’ll find enough nostalgia to bring you back to center. For many of you, this will get weird so I like any good shaman, I need to have songs for you to find your way back from the madness.

The majority of this playlist is comprised of original holiday songs. You want upbeat songs to sing-along to? Check! You want ballads that sing about missing loved ones and wanting to be home (with family) for the holidays? Check! You want great covers? Unfortunately, you’ll only find 3 (I’m not really into Christmas cover songs - sorry). You want a couple wacky curveball songs thrown in? I got you covered with a couple comedy songs and a gem from the Quad City DJs. There’s even a few foreign-language songs because ‘tis the season for inclusion and joy for all!

This playlist covers the full spectrum of Holiday song vibes so most likely you are going to hear a song or two that you might want to skip, but I implore you to resist the urge. First, scan the room and look for someone’s foot a-tappin’, maybe their shoulders will be dancing, or Uncle Timmy in the corner will be singing along while double-fisting eggnog and trying to dance the Asian Flush out of his cheeks. Any of these sights might keep you from Scrooge-ing someone else out of some fun. Just sit back and enjoy… after all, this is Christmas Time!

My second Christmas-themed playlist is called ‘Trapping Paper’ and much like the names suggests, this is made-up of trap remixes of the Christmas classics! Last year I realized most Christmas have little to no bass so I wondered what would happen if someone took the quintessential Christmas songs and beat them over the head with an 808. Luckily, some DJs have had a similar idea and I’ve worked hard to procure the best of the best. Enjoy!

Happy Holidays Everyone!!!
